What Will We Do Without Willie?
Sorry for the worrisome headline. Willie Nelson has not passed away or even canceled the Outlaw Music Festival. However, following his first cancellation of appearances due to health concerns this weekend, questions start to arise.
At 91, Willie Nelson is what some, probably most, would call old. This recent cancellation is a great reminder to appreciate artists while we can. In a statement from Nelson’s camp it was shared, "We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor’s orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days," it went on to say "he is expected to make a quick recovery and join the Outlaw Music Festival tour next week."
Nelson has been fortunate to be recognized by his peers and the artists he influenced throughout the years. An excellent example is his 90th birthday bash last year at the Hollywood Bowl. When I read about the cancellations, “I couldn't believe it was true”, and I was left with my "blue eyes crying in the rain," hearing that the "red headed stranger" would not be there to open the Outlaw Music Festival.
For concertgoers, I'm sure they feel it was "a little unfair" that the headliner was not there on what was described as an "uncloudy day" in Alpharetta, GA. I'd "have to be crazy" to think I wouldn't feel the same, but I understand how "the healing hands of time" work. Willie Nelson has been touring for over 70 years, operating under the motto "if you've got the money, I've got the time."
While his age and health might be viewed as a “reasons to quit”, he shared he had "no reason to quit" and is expected to make a quick recovery. Still, knowing the legend is late in life, it is "always on my mind" that he is operating "one day at a time," and it's "funny how time slips away."
We will continue to follow the country legend's health, knowing it is "crazy" that one “bloody Mary morning“ we will have to remember the "good times" with a "whiskey river." And every "good hearted woman" and man will have a valid "opportunity to cry."
Nelson is set to return to the Outlaw Music Festival today (6/24/24). Thinking of you, Willie, and wishing you all the best.
