A Historic Smackdown
On this day in history, the world was made aware of the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden by two of the nation's most unlikely news breakers, John Cena and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Dwayne would first report via a tweet: "Just got word that will shock the world - Land of the free...home of the brave DAMN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!" Johnson would later confirm the news that would shock the world, and the reason he was "DAMN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!" was, in fact, this news.
More touching than The Rock's cryptic tweet was John Cena revealing to a Tampa crowd that we had "caught and compromised to a permanent end, Osama Bin Laden." Sharing that he too was "damn proud to be an American" as the crowd cheered, a band played. Cena proudly saluted before making his exit. One proud moment in American history shared with us by two iconic men. Why the decision had not been made before to let the WWE be our source of world events is beyond me.
We should have had Hulk Hogan out there in 1989 to let us know about the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communist oppression in Eastern Europe. Bam Bam Bigelow would have been the man for the job when the North American Free Trade Agreement was passed, breaking down NAFTA and its elimination of tariffs between the US, Canada, and Mexico. Bam Bam would have had us on our feet thinking about this expanded economic future.
In 2015, when the Supreme Court finally legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, Big Show and Bubba Ray Dudley could have walked into the ring hand-in-hand before exchanging a big smooch. Thinking back to May 1st, 2011, and the way the news of Osama Bin Laden's death was presented to us as a nation, I can't help but feel robbed of additional magical moments throughout time.
