Mike Gundy Defends Star Running Back and Drunk Driving
Mike Gundy is a man. He's 40 (actually now he is 56). And, he just wants his players after a few drinks to have their hands at 10 and 2 and keep it between the mustard and the Mayo.
The Oklahoma State ball coach has never been shy when talking with the media, as his viral rant about his age demonstrated almost 17 years ago. But on Big 12 media day, he may have put his foot in his mouth a bit when discussing star running back Ollie Gordon II.
Gordon, the FBS's leading rusher last season, was arrested June 30th for DUI under 21 years of age, transporting an open container of alcohol, failing to maintain a single lane of traffic, and speeding. Gundy shared that he has no plans to discipline Gordon, as college football has become a business.
Gundy stated, "My job now in the business world that we're in is to make decisions for everybody. We're in a time where [players] are essentially employees… and make lots of money to play this game. It's a lot different than it was five years ago."
The matter-of-fact answer reflects the state of college athletics and is not what Gundy is being criticized for. He went on to reflect, "I've probably done that a thousand times in my life. And, and, you know, which is fine. I got lucky, people get lucky."
Gundy has since offered up a very Mike Gundy non-apology for the remarks. Meanwhile, Gordon has made a public apology for his actions and had private conversations with the coach and team about his arrest.
Imagine not loving college football. Guys like Gundy are the character constants that keep us tuning in on Saturdays through the roster turnovers and realignments. Gordon is a kid who made a mistake. Mike Gundy is a man, who is 56. And he is a coach that will always act in the best interest of Oklahoma State Football. Mike, you can coach for me any day, I am just not taking any rides.
