Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the French Open, ending his title defense and sacrificing his world's #1 ranking. The Serbian entered Roland Garros with some knee trouble, although the extent was not quite known as Djokovic remained mum until after his thrilling match with Francisco Cerundolo, in which he was forced to take a medical timeout, during which he consumed what a tournament doctor called the maximum amount of pills allowed to reduce pain and inflammation. After the match, the defending champion shared, "I don't know what will happen tomorrow — or after tomorrow, if I'll be able to step out on the court and play." An MRI today revealed that Djokovic had in fact torn the medial meniscus in his knee.
NOOO! This is beyond devastating for fans of the sport and for fans of the 37-year-old in particular, as we are starting to become limited in the amount of times we will get to witness the greatest to ever do it take the court. The Cerundolo match was incredible, with Novak clearly suffering an injury in the 2nd set and getting down in the fourth set 2-1 before storming back to pull the one-legged victory. His scheduled opponent tomorrow, Casper Ruud, will advance to the semifinals, where he will face Alexander Zverev or Alex de Minaur on extended rest. Truly disappointing to hear, as this likely removes Djokovic from the rest of the grand slam.
