Preseason Picks: Breaking Down Bears-Texans
There are a few things to consider if you plan on having some action on tonight's preseason contest between the Chicago Bears and the Houston Texans. First, who is playing for these teams? Next, who is coaching these teams? And lastly, are you alright? Everything good?
First up, who will actually be on the field tonight? Matt Eberflus has made it known that the Bears will not be playing any of their starters. So while they look to have a dynamic and explosive offense, we will not exactly be seeing a finalized version tonight. The Texans have been a bit closer to the vest, but DeMeco Ryans has hinted that there will be an abundance of youth on the field for his Houston Texans. Meaning we will see 2nd string on both sides.
Next, who is coaching? The Bears have new coordinators on both sides of the ball who will be seeing what they have with their backups. Meanwhile, DeMeco Ryans has a shored-up staff heading into their 2nd year after having tremendous success.
Finally, are you alright if you are wagering on the HOF game? Probably, but remember that gambling is for entertainment, not profit. And you can't win every game if you don't play every game.
So what's the play? The Bears opened at -1.5 and after the news of the starters was announced, moved to +2. I think in preseason, the only sensible bet is one made on the coaches. While DeMeco Ryans shined in his first year, and has a group of guys that love to play for him, the opposite cannot be said for Eberflus, who spent most of that year on the hot seat. With that simple analysis, I like Coach Ryans to get the most out of whoever is out there defensively and destroy the backup offensive line of the Bears.
I also think having the veteran QBs for the Texans in Davis Mills and Case Keenum is an edge over Tyson Bagent who is making his NFL debut without a strong supporting cast. I am giving the edge to Houston and comfortable laying the two. Preseason games can be messy and unpredictable so smart money would be no money. But, if you are eager to start working out your own preseason kinks as we enter the season, I would sprinkle on something and I will be on the Texans.
The Pick: Texans -2
