Batman vs. Biden
George Clooney once famously said, "Your head wasn't even on the job. All you could think about was Poison Ivy." That was June 20th, 1997, in a film that would kill the Batman franchise.
On July 10th, 2024, he said, "This isn't only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I've spoken with in private," in a statement attempting to kill the Biden franchise.
Which begs the question... Why does anyone care what George Clooney does? How is this a featured AP news story? And what does the opinion of 2006's Sexiest Man Alive have to do with anything?
To play devil's advocate, the Hollywood star and tequila mogul is a big-time Democrat donor who helped raise $30 million plus for Biden just a couple weeks ago. And his criticism seemed pointed and firsthand, sharing, "It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010," Clooney wrote. "He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate."
So there we have it: Danny Ocean himself, the on-set prankster, and a long-time supporter of the party is joining many Democrats who were horrified by what they witnessed on the debate stage.
But, what might make this statement newsworthy is that Clooney mentions senators and governors who are sharing his concern. George Clooney might be shocked by seeing the president up close, but shouldn't elected officials who work closely with the office have some sort of awareness? Why all of a sudden are the calls coming from inside the house (literally)? And why did it take George Clooney to unearth them?
Well, if you had seen the 1997 Joel Schumacher masterpiece, you would know why. In the film, a central storyline is a rift between Batman (played by George Clooney) and the titular Robin (played by the masterful Chris O'Donnell). The rift is caused by a pink pheromone dust sprayed on him by Poison Ivy (played by Uma Thurman). The dust makes Robin become blindly obsessed with her and creates a tension between him and Batman.
This conflict lasts most of the film before Bruce Wayne has a stern talking-to with his sidekick Dick Grayson (those are their other names for those guys, besides Batman, George Clooney and Robin, the masterful Chris O'Donnell).
Bruce Wayne explains that they are stronger together and how they have been misled by Poison Ivy. They unite to save the city from Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze's (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) diabolical plan.
I think we can learn a lot about our current political situation from this film. Joe Biden's administration (Poison Ivy) has been blasting his own party with pink pheromone dust (prepared statements and limited appearances), and it is up to George Clooney (Batman) to remind them to get 'their head back on the job'. Will it be enough? Who knows. It is just like Mr. Freeze always says, "Cool Party!"
