AP TOP 25 POLL WEEK THREE
With week two in the books, we have a new and more informed AP Top 25 poll. NIU shocked the Irish, the Longhorns trampled the Wolverines, and Iowa State won the Cy-Hawk. So, did the AP get it right? Well, let’s break it down Goldilocks-style to see if these ranks are too hot, too cold, or just right.
1) Georgia - Just Right
Kings stay kings. Sure, Georgia was playing an inferior opponent in TN Tech, but you can’t drop a team for doing what they are supposed to—putting up 45 points in three quarters and only allowing three. Would hate to be on the track as the Mean Machine’s season continues.
2) Texas - Just Right
You cannot give out a 1 and 1a in the AP poll. But if you could, the Longhorns would likely deserve it after heading into the Big House and demolishing Michigan, who may not be good (more on that later). The Longhorns now spend the next three weeks playing cupcakes before the Red River Shootout. Time for everyone to ask the question… Is Texas back?
3) Ohio State - Too Hot
Ohio State had a huge win this weekend, but not the 52-6 victory over Akron. Their win was the ass-kicking that Texas handed Michigan. The Buckeyes, while talented, have not left Columbus nor have they played any team that could even pretend to be relevant. I would have them lower because of the lack of résumé.
4) Alabama - Too Hot
Good teams win, great teams cover. USF +31 was an easy winner through three quarters, with the Tide even trailing during the game. The four spot is too good for a team that has yet to showcase the talent they may have. Next week they will have to head to Camp Randall, and while Wisconsin is not that great, it is a tough place to play, and then they get Georgia. Putting Bama at four only works with the thought that they won’t move too far down if this week gets messy or Georgia destroys them.
5) Ole Miss - Too Cold
Ole Miss is a point factory. Lane and the boys just put on their hard hats and score with ease until they start to feel bad for their opponents and call off the dogs. I think 128-3 through two games should be enough to have Ole Miss higher here until they face a ranked opponent.
6) Missouri - Just Right
Missouri moves up three spots after two impressive victories. Coming into the season, I thought they were a bit overrated, but they have yet to allow a single point and will have the chance to beat up on a ranked opponent (sorta) this week.
7) Tennessee - Too Cold
Nico and the Vols should be a top-five team in the country. NC State might have been a fugazi 24 in the poll, but they were ranked, and Tennessee beat them by 41 points at a neutral site that geographically favored the Wolfpack.
8) Penn State - Too Hot
Bowling Green was a 34-point dog who lost by just seven and was leading into the fourth quarter. Penn State might have been coming off a victory hangover, but they were exposed here on offense and defense.
9) Oregon - Too Hot
Oregon had the perfect chance this week to shut up the haters (not me) and the doubters (very much me) by blowing up Boise State. Instead, they went into the half trailing and were only able to win by three. They head to the Civil War next week in Corvallis where literally anything could happen.
10) Miami (FL) - Too Cold
The Hurricanes are one of the most explosive offenses in college football and proved as much by hanging 56 in their first home game. I think 10 is correct from a talent perspective, but with no ranked teams on their schedule for the next month and no opportunity to climb, I would have them higher here as the number one team in the ACC.
11) USC - Too Cold
The Trojans' offensive prowess was on full display on Saturday night, scoring 48 as they returned home. I think Lincoln Riley has shown he currently has a better team than at least two top ten teams. They have a bye this week before heading to the Big House—a game that, if Michigan cannot figure something out on defense, could get ugly quickly for Big Blue.
12) Utah - Just Right
You cannot have Utah ranked lower just because there is a possibility that Cam Rising might miss some time. But, watching the game Saturday, it is truly jarring how much their team relies on Rising. In the second half without the seven-year senior, the Utes struggled to move the ball and were held scoreless. 12 for now, but if Rising is going to miss time, this is not a top-25 team.
13) Oklahoma State - Just Right
Gundy gang needed OT to beat Pittman’s Razorbacks, who have looked much better than expected. Winning in OT to an SEC team is huge for the Cowboys and worthy of climbing the three spots.
14) Kansas State - Too Hot
K-State headed into the 4th quarter tied with Tulane and trailed until just 11 minutes remained in the game, ultimately winning on a fumble return. I think there's talent on this team, but surviving Tulane does not bump you up three spots.
15) Oklahoma - Just Right
The Schooners beat a bad Houston team by just four points at home. They can remain at 15 for now, but I am still curious to see what this team will look like when they face actual talent.
16) LSU - Just Right
LSU and Brian Kelly were in a great spot on Saturday, heading home to Tiger Stadium to face an FCS opponent. Offensively, the Tigers were fine, scoring 44, but allowing 21 points to Nicholls makes me suspect that their defense might not be fixed. Also, Brian Kelly killed a kid.
17) Michigan - Too Hot
They are who we thought they were! Let’s not let them off the hook. After what happened at the Big House on Saturday, it is clear there was nothing held back on offense against Fresno State; there just is nothing on offense for this team. And while the defense has a lot of talented players, they are not particularly good and were shredded by Ewers and the Longhorns, who were without their #1 running back for much of the game. This is a bad football team and should be treated as such.
18) Notre Dame - Too Hot
You cannot beat the Aggies in Kyle Stadium only to head home and lose to NIU. This was a disgusting loss for the Irish, and they should wear it by falling further than 13 spots. After praising Freeman’s approach in their opener, I now have doubts about his ability as a leader of men, having the team come out flat at home and lose to a MAC school.
19) Louisville - Just Right
Louisville certainly can score. However, the opponents they have done it against are Austin Peay and Jax State. I do not think they belong in the top twenty. I am very curious to see how they perform against Georgia Tech in two weeks and Notre Dame the week after.
20) Arizona - Too Hot
I credited the Wildcats' offense last week for not missing a beat with the loss of their coach. However, the deficiency I did not see against Northern Arizona was on full display against New Mexico. Arizona could not stop a nosebleed. I think Friday night against K-State will be interesting to see if they can outscore a quality opponent.
21) Iowa State - Just Right
Iowa State put up 20 unanswered points in the second half on the road Saturday to win the Cy-Hawk series. I am perfectly fine with them taking Iowa’s ranking, and with a favorable schedule for the next month, I think the Cyclones can hang around the AP for a bit.
22) Clemson - Just Right
Dabo and the Tigers return to the rankings with an impressive offensive performance, albeit against App State. They were destroyed in Week 1, but it is worth noting that anyone would have been against Georgia.
23) Nebraska - Too Cold
Dillon Riaovia is the real deal. And Nebraska has the defense to back him up. I know Colorado is not that talented of a complete football team, but they were (or were considered) an offensive powerhouse, so for the Cornhuskers to only allow the Buffs to score 10 (3 through 3 quarters), I think this team deserves a little bit more respect.
24) Boston College - Too Hot
Bill O’Brien is building something up in Boston. That being said, I am not sure I can credit the Eagles too much for beating up on Duquesne, and I certainly can't give them credit for beating up on Florida State, who we have learned is extremely fraudulent.
25) Northern Illinois - Just Right
If you beat the number 5 team in the country on the road and get paid 1.4 million dollars to do it, you deserve a little number by your name. Good for NIU and the Huskies.
And that's the third AP poll Goldilocks-style. I think the AP have left themselves some flexibility with certain teams, but for the most part, seem to have it correct. Looking forward to next week!
