AP TOP 25 POLL WEEK TWO
Week one is in the books, and that means we have a brand new AP Top 25. This one is based on actual play. It has rightfully kicked Florida State to the curb, dropped Clemson eleven spots, and bumped USC up ten spots. Let’s break down all 25 Goldilocks-style to see if they are too hot, too cold, or just right.
1) Georgia - Just Right
Kings stay kings. The preseason number one team remains at the top after a second-half beatdown of Clemson at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
2) Ohio State - Just Right
Ohio State did what they were supposed to do at home, putting up 52 on the Zips to remain the number two team in the country.
3) Texas - Just Right
Texas was impressive, shutting out a Colorado State team at home that had some buzz for retaining talent. They also managed to get Arch Manning into the game for a quick TD and didn’t have to show off too much as they head to the Big House for a showdown with the national champion.
4) Alabama - Too Hot
Bama climbs up a spot after laying a 63-0 smackdown on Western Kentucky. I’m giving them a "too hot" because, while putting up 63 is impressive and blanking the Hilltoppers at home is nice, it should have been expected. Bama gets a bump based on their name.
5) Notre Dame - Just Right
The Fighting Irish went down to Kyle Field and pulled off an upset of the Aggies (they were three-point underdogs). Their defense looked strong, and their offense was good enough. I suspect Notre Dame finishes somewhere around fifth for the season, so even with the ranked win, I have this as just right.
6) Ole Miss - Too Cold
Ole Miss scored 76 points and could have probably gone to triple digits. They also managed to hold Furman to zero. I have them as "too cold" when compared to Alabama. Furman isn’t as talented as Western Kentucky, but 76 is greater than 63.
7) Oregon - Too Hot
The Ducks looked bad at home, beating Idaho by only ten and not putting up more than 24 points. I think with their expectations coming into the season, this should have dropped them even further. Is Dillon Gabriel a quack?
8) Penn State - Too Cold
Penn State went on the road to a West Virginia team that had high hopes and showcased a brand new style of offense that made Drew Allar look like a Heisman candidate. I wasn’t sold on new OC Andy Kotelnicki, but after that performance in Morgantown, it feels like the Nittany Lions might be a Big Ten contender. They at least looked the part more than the Ducks.
9) Missouri - Too Hot
Missouri looked good at home, beating up on a bad Murray State team 51-0. While there would be no reason to drop them from their previous rank (11), I’m not sure it makes sense for them to rise in the rankings. But that’s SEC bias for ya.
10) Michigan - Too Hot
Michigan falls one spot after beating Fresno State 30-10, taking all four quarters at home to do so. They fell just one spot, and I understand that being the previous national champion might have helped buoy them. But, I hope for Big Blue’s sake that they were trying not to put much on tape with the Longhorns coming in. If not, I suspect a long Saturday for the Wolverines when Texas comes to town.
11) Utah - Just Right
Cam Rising played just one half in Salt Lake Thursday night, and that was all the Utes needed. They climb just one spot and are the highest-rated Big 12 team this week. Eleven feels right for the Utes, who handled Southern Utah with ease and were quick to show second string.
12) Miami - Too Cold
Miami went into The Swamp and embarrassed the Gators. The Hurricanes might have single-handedly gotten Billy Napier fired. This team showed that the preseason hype was warranted and looked like the best ACC team by far and a legitimate contender, winning on the road against an in-state rival. A performance that I feel should have warranted top-ten consideration.
13) USC - Too Cold
Another one of the marquee matchups of Labor Day weekend saw Miller Moss lead a game-winning drive to beat Brian Kelly and the Tigers in Allegiant Stadium. The Trojans' defense looked vastly improved, and their offense didn’t miss a beat even with the absence of the NFL’s number one pick. I think the win as an underdog and the manner in which it was won should have put USC in the top ten.
14) Tennessee - Just Right
Nico and the Vols climb just one spot after their 69(nice)-3 drubbing of Chattanooga. This will be a fun team to watch this season, but we will need to see the offense play a more competent opponent before we get too excited about the team.
15) Oklahoma - Just Right
Oklahoma was able to take their foot off the gas early Friday night and still put up fifty on a bad Temple team. Another team that did what they were supposed to do and didn’t answer too many questions.
16) Oklahoma State - Just Right
The Gundy gang looked the part of a Big 12 contender, coming out and dominating a highly touted South Dakota State team that many thought would be able to hang if the Cowboys sleepwalked at all.
17) Kansas State - Just Right
K-State handled their business at home and climbed a spot. Shrug. Should be fun to see them face off against a team that isn’t an FCS opponent.
18) LSU - Too Hot
Brian Kelly still can’t win a big game. The Tigers fall five spots in the Week One poll after losing a tough one in Vegas. I have 18 as too high coming off a loss, but this is probably where they should have started the season. Also worth noting, their defense did seem much improved.
19) Kansas - Just Right
Lance Leipold is going to continue to run an uptempo offense that will make the Jayhawks fun to watch. Whether or not it is as effective against a school that doesn’t sound like the made-up rival camp in a teen movie remains to be seen. Kansas 48, Lindenwood 3.
20) Arizona - Too Cold
I take no pleasure in writing that the school in the south is underrated. But they are. Even with the loss of their coach, the Wildcats' offense did not miss a beat. They did also let up 39 points at home to New Mexico… Put the U of A in your overs tickler file this season.
21) Iowa - Too Hot
Iowa scored 40 points on their own; this is only the fifth time in the last five seasons the Hawkeyes have scored that much. Is this the year Iowa has an offense? Probably not—they did it against an Illinois State team that had three turnovers and looked completely inept on offense. Next week, with an in-state rival coming to town, we should see a return to form for their offense. Climbing four spots feels like too much given the quality of their Week One opponent.
22) Louisville - Just Right
Louisville's offense came out firing, putting up 62 at home against Austin Peay. They climb into the top 25 with an impressive scoring display.
23) Georgia Tech - Too Hot
The win in Dublin is looking less and less impressive with what we have seen out of Florida State. Still, as the only two-win team in the Top 25 who has beaten a ranked opponent, even a fugazi one, they should land a number by their name at least for this week.
24) North Carolina State - Just Right
The Wolfpack seemed to struggle a bit with Western Carolina, only winning by 17 at home. There is a chance they were keeping it very vanilla on both sides of the ball in anticipation of Tennessee in Week Two, but if you are an NCST fan, Week One had to be a bit of a head-scratcher.
25) Clemson - Too Hot
If you only played one half of football, then maybe Clemson would still be in the Top 25. Unfortunately, that is not how the game goes, and while their first-half showing against Georgia was impressive, in the end, they lost by 31 points on a neutral field and looked hopeless on offense. I still think Clemson can get to 9 wins and compete for an ACC title, but after one game, they cannot be considered a top 25 team in the country.
This week we will get to see a couple of ranked matchups that could reset the AP poll again. Personally, I am looking forward to Tennessee-North Carolina State, as I think the Vols might end up being the most fun team to watch this season. Texas and Michigan could also be a blast, but I suspect we are going to see the Longhorns dominate.
