Edmonton: America's Team
The Edmonton Oilers are America's Team. If that seems odd to you, you might be a big-time geography buff, map owner, even perhaps. But when the puck drops tomorrow, all of us here stateside should learn to be loyal to the Oil. For any non-renowned geography heads, I should share that Edmonton is in fact not in America. It is actually the capital city of Alberta, with a population of 1,010,899 and North America's second-largest shopping mall (USA! USA! USA!).
So why would us Yanks be rooting for this Edmonton hockey team to lift their sixth Stanley Cup? Well, it would be their first since '89, and it would break the 30-year drought of Canada not having had the Cup, but mostly because they are not from Florida. The Panthers are returning to the Cup for their second time in two years; they are currently -130 to win the series, and they have Sam Bennett, the forward who donkey-punched Marchand in the Bruins series, causing him to miss several games. So while there is a lot to like about this Edmonton Team (Cup drought, great fans, Connor McDavid), there is a lot to dislike about the Florida Panthers (They are from Florida, Sam Bennett, and they are from Florida).
Whether or not you decide to be loyal to the Oil or you are rooting for a rat trick, this Stanley Cup Final promises to be a good one. Edmonton's loaded forwards, McDavid and Draisaitl, against a deep Florida defense that boasts the league's best only allowing 2.39 goals per game this season. Hopefully, America's team can bring the Cup home to Canada; we'll still have the largest shopping mall.
