O Danny Boy The Pelinkas The Pelinkas are calling
This morning, the sports-watching world was awoken with a shake at 7 am by a Woj Bomb:
Danny Hurley, is the primary coaching target of the Lakers, contradicting previous reports from Shams that the Lakers "were zeroing in" on J.J. Redick.
Woj vs. Shams is one of the all-time rivalries: Biggie and Pac, Rocky and Drago, Israel and Palestine, and Woj and Shams breaking NBA news. These guys do not like each other. But this article is not about the news of the news but about the news itself. Danny Hurley is likely the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. And that stinks.
Coach Hurley has not been shy about his NBA ambitions, sharing them with Dan Patrick and Pardon My Take in the last two months, but always presenting the notion as a "yeah, maybe someday, that would be nice." For his timeline to have advanced so much in the last month is disheartening as a college hoops fan and a Laker hater.
Dan, what the hell are you doing?! You have the opportunity to be historically great at a historically great program. You could shatter the records of your predecessor Calhoun, rout Rupp, and kill K. Hell, the way Danny Hurley has been running the UConn program, he could have even won with Wooden.
So, I am disappointed that he would take an NBA coaching job. It is a lot less work and likely a lot more money. It is also with the LeBron-led Lakers. Why sign up for the migraine? The Lakers are a play-in team in the West at best. LeBron is a famed coach killer, the Lakers lack draft capital, and NBA coaching is more about willies and joes than X's and O's. Coach Hurley going there would not be a win-now move but a "win at some point" decision by Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka. They, as a team, would have to get worse before they got better.
Plus, Dan, I am a huge fan of your sideline antics, your Pardon My Take appearances, and your general unhinged disposition; please don't make me despise you by going to the purple and gold.
