Is the Cowboys' Running Back Room Cooked?

While most teams were spending yesterday shedding veterans and hopeful undrafted free agents, the Dallas Cowboys did the opposite, signing veteran running back Dalvin Cook to their practice squad.

Dalvin Cook joins fellow 29-year-old Ezekiel Elliott on the Cowboys. It’s important to note that 29 years old in running back terms is closer to mid-forties. The two other running backs on the depth chart are Rico Dowdle (26) and Deuce Vaughn (22). This makes the Cowboys the oldest team at the position and strongly indicates a crowded committee approach to the run game this fall.

While Cook is currently on the practice squad, he is eligible to be called up by September 8th in time for the Cowboys' opener against the Browns. Players on the practice squad are allowed three elevations to the 46-man game day roster. Cook spent the previous season with the Jets and Ravens, where he rushed for a disappointing combined 237 yards. The move to add additional veteran depth at the position is a curious one for competitors, a frustrating one for fantasy owners, but an intriguing one for the over-the-hill crowd.
