Williams' Wait is Over

On Monday night, a social media post shared by Fredrick Williams brought a great deal of relief to the Bay Area. The Twitter post from Trent Williams' brother showed the star left tackle exiting a plane from Houston, where he had been holding out during training camp. This indicated that the three-time Pro Bowler would be on the field next week when the New York Jets come to Levi’s Stadium.

The 36-year-old Williams had missed the entirety of the preseason and training camp, accumulating $4 million in fines. His current contract was set to pay him $20.5 million this season under the six-year, $138.1 million deal he signed in 2021. Since that season, Williams has been an integral part of the Niners' offensive success, boasting a 95.8% pass block win rate. Running backs on the left side of the line (Williams' side) have averaged more than 1.6 yards per carry more compared to the right. The current deal did not include any additional guaranteed money and ranked sixth among tackles in the league.

Throughout camp, there was never any concern expressed by the team that the dispute would last into the season, with Coach Shanahan saying, "I think we’ll be able to work that out." Still, quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey must be excited for Williams' return to the offense, especially since their top three guards have missed significant practice time.

The Forty-Niners open their NFL season on the 10th at home when Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets come to Santa Clara. After appearances in the Super Bowl and NFC Championship over the last two years, Forty-Niner faithful have high expectations for the season and can now exhale and enjoy the on-field activities. Details on Williams' new deal have not yet been made public.
