Ducking Reality: Portland's Misplaced Priorities
PORTLAND, Maine (CB) -- The miniature Victorian-style house has been returned to Deering Oaks Park for the spring and summer season. The house, built in 1886 for the city's centennial parade, has been installed in the park every year since, serving as a home for ducks and undergoing a complete repair every five years. The duck house was in jeopardy of being replaced in 1987 before Roger Knight of Smiling Hill Farms stepped up to save the home. This year’s renovations include solar panels and a wrap around porch as well as paint job.
House people, not Ducks! Portland, Maine's liberal elites are at it again, prioritizing the well-being of waterfowl instead of that of their citizens. In a study conducted last year, it was estimated that there would need to be an additional 84,000 homes built in Maine by 2030 ("Maine Housing Crisis," 2023). Shelters are full, and the housing market continues to exceed the common Portland Mainer's median wage. This tone-deaf display of renovating a home for ducks and placing it in a desirable location near both schools and parks, while upgrading the home to solar, flies in the face of the citizens begging for affordable housing solutions.
While the ducks should be commended for their pivot to renewable energy, I would like to call into question the location. Schools and parks?! Ducks are ruthless, bread-loving rapists that should be as far away from children as possible ("Don't Be Fooled," 2017). Portland, Maine, has prioritized the Donalds and Daffys of the world over their own population, and it is sickening. House is cute though.
